Rhythm Stick, a club night created for and by people with disabilities, launches at Alexandra Palace on 27th July. Lucille Hughes has been taking part in the programme and below she talks about her experiences of being a member of the event’s steering group and taking part in the Rhythm Stick training programme.
Guest post by Lucille Hughes – A Great Experience
January 2019 was the start of a journey, which has opened up so many opportunities for me to gain new skills and added confidence – thanks to Marine Begault (Creative Learning Producer).
I was invited to attend a steering group at Alexandra Palace called the Rhythm Stick Project.
What’s this I asked? A project looking to recruit people with disabilities to run a club night for adults with disabilities.
I jumped at the opportunity because I love getting involved in community events, sharing ideas and being around people my own age. Shortly afterwards I applied for a position to become an event organiser and commenced my training.
What I have gained so far? The Rhythm Stick Training Programme has introduced me to new friends, who I meet with once a week. I have learnt how to work on ideas to market the club night through social media sites, designed a flyer and I’m currently working towards producing a programme for the Club Night.
What is the best thing so far? Being treated like an adult and feeling like a valuable member of the team! My CV will be glowing by the end of the training as I’m learning budgeting skills, how to communicate my ideas and information effectively and how to work well in a team.
I’m really looking forward to the launch of the Rhythm Stick Club Night and know it will be a great event due to all the fantastic ideas and hard work that has gone into it.
It’s such a good idea to have a club night run by people with disabilities and for people with disabilities. Watch this space!
Saturday 27th July at 19:00 and finishes at 22:30 and it’s at Alexandra Palace Theatre. You can book your ticket online here.
